Productivity Over Activity

The demands of innovation and entrepreneurship can be quite high. If you’ve tried to innovate or attempt an entrepreneurial project before, then you’re well aware of this. A lot of sleepless nights; hours on end of staring at a computer screen; and — perhaps worst of all — often very little to show for it.

Have you ever stopped to wonder why this is? That is, have you ever wondered why innovation is so demanding, why entrepreneurship rarely comes easy?

Of course there’s something naturally draining about these pursuits which is inescapable. But surely there’s got to be a way to make these pursuits a little less draining, right?

What we know is that there are millions of explanations as to why innovating and entrepreneuring (yep, we’ve just created that word) can be so taxing. Some are better than others. We at Harness don’t profess to have the one “right” explanation, but we do have a theory.

The Theory: Productivity vs. Activity

Creatives, innovators, entrepreneurs — really anyone who finds themself in an innovation ecosystem — will tell you of the never-ending lists of to-dos. They’re a necessary evil. We know you know what we’re talking about. Those in the university context especially know this.

Mounting lists of to-dos have at least one guarantee for innovators, entrepreneurs and university students: activity. Simply put, activity is the exertion of our energy; the use of our resources. Activity is not to be confused with productivity, however.

Productivity is about the results we get from the expenditure of our energy and resources. More specifically, productivity occurs when these expenditures move us tangibly closer to our goals.

Choosing productivity over activity can make the difference between staying stagnant and achieving your dreams.

So, are you an active or a productive innovator/entrepreneur? Are you simply expending your energy and resources? Or is the expenditure of your energy and resources moving you tangibly closer to your goals?

Let’s suppose you’re more active than productive, or, at the very least, that you oscillate between the two. This is what we do at Harness to ensure that our users have the resources they need to stay productive.

How Harness Keeps You Productive: Univa

Univa is an online platform for university students, alumni, staff and faculty that uses intuitive software to make connection, mentorship and creativity between innovators and entrepreneurs a concrete reality. We’re about uniting innovation communities.

You’re now thinking, “Univa sounds awesome! But what does it have to do with this whole productivity vs. activity problem?”

Good question, reader. Here’s the relevance.

Through its emphasis on generating mentor relationships and connections between fellow innovators and entrepreneurs, Univa offers a way to outsource your needs. Univa recognizes that you can’t get everything done by yourself. By means of its intuitive force, Univa learns your innovation- and entrepreneurial-related needs and connects you to the people most fit to help you with them.

In a nutshell, Univa grants you needed connection. Univa grants you mentorship or someone to mentor. Univa grants you productivity.

Choosing productivity over activity can make the difference between staying stagnant and achieving your dreams.

The biggest threat to productivity is the idea that we can get it all done by ourselves — the idea, in other words, that if we do more, we’ll be more productive. This is a false narrative. Let us help you resist it.

We invite you today to reduce your activity, increase your productivity and join an ecosystem full of innovators and entrepreneurs trying to do the same on Univa.
